Our thoughts on advertising

Jane

The documentary that I had since which is Art & Copy is fascinating insight into the field of advertising, Art and Copy is a powerful new film about advertising and inspiration.  This documentary is directed by Doug Pray. This documentary reveals the work and wisdom of some of the better influential advertising creative of our time from advertising creative of our time is “creative revolution” of the 1960s, culture and unknown outside their industry. These writers and artists are all brought a very strong spirit to their work in a business and others Art & Copy were responsible for “Just Do It”, “I love NY” and many others that are produced. Also, surprisingly this documentary managed to grab way lots of attention which is a millions views. This truly makes them to continue to their advertising film and it motivates them to advertise even more. On top of that, there were 14 people in that documentary that had film and their stories are launched on the TV, Billboards and many other social media. 70% of its TV Broadcast revenue comes from advertisement and also 75% of global satellite service revenue comes from the Television. Different people have different type of thoughts for this documentary but for me, this film can motivate every one of us to be better and we get to think wider. As an example, we get to be more creative and many more. They work really hard for doing the billboards and Chad work really hard for his great grandfather yet he does not have the time. George had also explained what advertising means. From the way he said, it really motivates people how great advertising film is and it is very detailed on how he had said from his mouth. Advertising is in the late 15’s and my opinion is advertising is really one of a good job to be in because we get to learn many new things, explore the world, gain more knowledge, and cultures and custom.

First and foremost, the scenes, quotes and interviews that had impressed me  is when this lady said her father was an ambulance driver and he is currently now depress because of his problems yet how much time she had spent growing up with him. Nobody ever talks to her about anything and she said “people who are loners who have life to overcome when their young, they can get the strength later on” really impressed me. Her parents had no money for piano lessons for her and many others. When she got this advertising film job in the department her whole life changed. From that moment, her whole life changed and she was very happy through this job is a very big think for her. She has the perfection to work hard which really impressed me because she was once nothing but now she is something.

In addition, this film enlightened me about the future and I will consider about this career which is the advertising film. Why I will consider about this career is because everyone in that documentary had difficulty in the past and now they have something in their cert. They worked really hard to be in this film and they created many type of things which are so creative and brilliant. This really made me interested because to come to think of it, advertising is a great experience that we can make in our life. We get to explore more and meet new people around, gain experience and many others way that we can gain in this career. There is also no regret for them and I believe there will not be any regret for anyone.  We can also that improve our creativity. Advertising is hard because it is needed to be filmed but if we think about it really hard, what job is ever easy? Nothing is easy in life because there are always up’s and down’s in something.

Last but not least, what or how the society will be like without advertising? I believe without advertisement it will be really hard for every one of us. A world without advertising it is like the world without food. By not having advertising, people around in this world will not know what is happening to the world. Advertising informs us of things we don’t know and we often find it helpful it is because we get to learn more new things from advertisement. Life will be really difficult without advertising. Also, we often want or need to argue about anything because most of the people usually just sit back and relax through the commercial’s offering.  Sometimes of course it is false but most of it is true. Some of the advertisements are funny through. All the effects and the way the actors speak or many other ways they showed it. Apart from that, advertisement switch brands and it really drives young people crazy because in this era now there are a lot of new type of fashions which are Nike, Pull and Bear and many others that wasted billions. Without any advertising, people in this era now will not know what brands are all that and they will not even know what is fashion.

In a nutshell, this documentary is one of the greatest documentaries that I had watched. It really motivates me, inspire me and many others because they really worked hard for their job and they have much great creativity in their mind. This Art & Copy is also really meaningful, entertaining and it will be great if there are more entertaining films in the future.  Advertising is a form of marketing communication used to sell or promote items but usually it is more to business products and many others.

Art & Copy is a powerful film about both advertising and creativity. Directed by Doug Pray this inspirational documentary trails influential giants in the advertising world. Art & Copy uncovers legendary advertisements in the world; of such include Nike, Got Milk and Tommy Hilfiger.

To start off I initially had the idea that advertising was very boring and just a medium to psycho clueless customers into buying meaningless products. The production and goal in the industry was just to satisfy their clients. But after watching this superb documentary I found out that the industry is in no doubt very interesting.

From Art & Copy, I finally understood what the power of advertising has to the society. Advertising has become a revolution to many companies in the US. The impact it had was significant to all the big corporations we have existing today. The incorporation of both art director and copywriter initiated by Bill Bernbach was phenomenal.

Advertising has become more entertaining. The attention it gets now is vast in comparison to what it had decades ago. From the advertisements showed in Art & Copy I was able to pick out a few that have elements of humor in it. Audiences crave for creativeness and originality an advertisement has to offer. It brings one a sense of happiness watching it on the television and I believe it did change throughout the years.

To add, with the era that we live in now, the prominence of Internet would shake the industry a whole lot. With the adverts on television and radio already being invasive, we are now bombarded with it all over the web. But overall, seeing how the industry was evolved from the creative force of Bernbach, advertising has just got better and better.

One of the memorable interviews that has lasted an impression on me was with Dan Wieden, discussing on the origins of the legendary Nike -Just Do It motto. Wieden discusses on his inspiration to come up with the motto and eventually opens up that it was actually appropriated from the last words from a man that was about to be executed for murder in Utah, which were ‘Let’s Do It’. Wieden liked how the ‘Do It’ sounded like and thus incorporated it into the Nike ads. Without knowing, audiences looked into the motto more in depth from his original concept for solely, sports. From then on, people live by the positive motto. The legendary slogan gave courage and hope to the public. Many of which are women who try to find empowerment.

“Good advertising makes food taste better, cars run better, it changes the perception of anything!” – George Lois.

This is by far the best quote I could source out from the film. It is witty yet it tells me how influential a single advertisement can be. With enough creative skills, an ad could play with a person’s mind and evoke the inner self of one to buy a certain product. I feel that with good advertising comes great power. To control someone is possible through advertisements. This industry can change how people think and act. To me, I find this very daunting. What if the power that was given were to be used wrongly?  Let that settle in for a moment.

Upon watching this documentary I was surprised to see how sensational the field of advertising really is. It changed my perception of the industry a whole lot. I personally love designing and art in general, studying this film resulted me into understanding that a hefty amount of creativity needs to be inputted into the field. I was unaware and ignorant enough to think that everything which goes under the advertisement industry is gray and functions in a straight line. The interviews with the revolutionist in this film gave me a different insight towards the industry. Each interview with the creative made me realize that this field isn’t monotonous after all. Never have I thought that this documentary make me consider in doing advertising as my future career path. It was that good.

The society would be awfully dull without advertising.  I feel that there would be a lack of vital information and less entertainment. The pressure of consumers purchasing products would be the apparent and having to live a less stressful life, mainly by not needing to wait for that ad on YouTube to finish.

Advertising is a communication medium to shape the consumer’s opinions and action towards certain products or services. Having no channel to do so would make the consumer have difficulties on knowing the information needed on the product. The society will be left clueless about the products they see. Life in general would be vague and boring without the emergence of advertising. I learn to appreciate the importance of advertising and understand the upbringing of this industry even better.

After watching the powerful and meaningful 2009 documentary film titled Art & Copy by Doug Pray, it has showed me an eye opening world of advertising and introduced inspirational people like George Lois, Jeff Manning and Liz Dolan that has change the culture of advertisement throughout the years but are virtually unknown outside their industry. Before this, I always thought that producing or creating advertisement is a very easy thing to do. However, I found out that it is totally the opposite after watching the film. It takes much effort, time and creativity to produce an unforgettable advertisement that will remain in the advertising record of history. Famous advertisement such as “Just Do It”, “I Love NY”, “Got Milk?” and “Think Different” were shown in the film that not many knew about. The creators of the advertisements was able to grab the public’s attention and really move them with a simple goal in mind which is to let the audience notice the product they are advertising. I personally like simple, straightforward and clear presented advertisements because it is more understandable and not complicated. Advertisement has evolved a lot over the years with the proliferation of media, history of deception and the ability to time shift with technology. Advertising became so invasive and consumers became so indifferent. Moreover, brands did not really exist in the past but due to advertisements now everything is needed to be stamp with a brand so people would actually buy the product. Nowadays, advertisements is seen everywhere and I mean literally anywhere from the streets outside to the internet back home.

At the beginning, George Lois mentioned advertising being a poison gas and I strongly agree with his statement. This is because when once an advertisement becomes famous, the people will get to know about it and the ad will eventually spread like wildfire following with people swarming to purchase the product. It is a useful tool to introduce something or let people know about a certain thing in a short amount of time. He did also tell about a very creative idea of producing an advertisement back then by putting the art director and a copy writer together using both talents to create an advertisement. He said that advertisements must be unique for people to notice it otherwise it would be just an ordinary advertisement and great advertising basically makes everything better. The popular German car billboard advertisement did made an impression on me with their usage of simple phrases and words also with an image of the car. It did not contain many information about the product but it was easy to understand what the advertisement was trying to show to the public. Another interesting advertisement that caught my attention was the Federal Express advertisement. All the people in the commercial was talking very fast and that first attracted me to continue watching it but later I realized it was trying to show the public that their delivery service is fast by applying to the speed they talk. It also ended with an appealing phrase “When it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight”. There are various quotes in the film and some of them are shockingly true facts about the advertising industry. First, “Food companies spent 32 billion on advertising last year” and “Car companies spent more than 15 billion on advertising”. The amount of money is not surprising because they really need to spend that much to compete with many other companies out there that are doing exactly the same thing. It is not easy to promote a product with just merely one or two commercials, if the company wants global recognition. Furthermore, people do not realize how many advertisements they actually encounter daily, I was stunt to know these information from the film like “Each year, the average child sees 20000 TV commercials” and “Americans see 61 minutes of ads each day on the internet, TV and mobile screens”.

The documentary definitely has further enlightened me about the future prospects of the field of advertising. I learned so much about advertising from the film than in my past life time. The possibilities for this industry will be much bigger in the future seeing the evolution of advertising that has reach up until now. It is constantly expanding and new creative ideas are thought of for making advertisements every day. One thing for sure is that advertising will not stop even after many years later because a lot of people relies on advertisement to get information about something and it is also a form of communication between many sellers out there and the consumers which is us. People see advertisement and commercials all over the place like in newspapers, magazines and televisions. Honestly, advertising companies do earn quite a fortune just by creating advertisements. I would be very much interested in pursuing a career in this field after watching the film.

If one day we live in a society without advertising, people will not be able to notice products that are selling on the market and they would lose connection with the sellers. People will eventually receive information slower due to the need to physically go to a place where they need information about a certain product and ask about it because there is no advertisements showing them. In addition, many people will be jobless if advertising companies or agencies do not exist anymore because there is a ton of people out there that makes a living by producing advertisements for the public.

‘Art and Copy’ is a documentary about advertising and creativity. From television commercials and newspaper advertisements to magazine layouts and billboards, we are all being constantly acknowledged with an advertisement for some product, service, or idea. Filmmaker Doug Pray who express the business of advertising in the documentary. In the film, it interviews a number of the most respected men and women to talk about their work, motivations, and their perspective on the creative business. These artists and writers who are in ‘Art and Copy’ George Lois, Mary Wells, Dan Wieden, Lee Clow, Hal Riney and others featured were answerable for "Just Do It", "I Love New York", "Where's the Beef?" ,"Got Milk", "Think Different". Furthermore, the first woman to run a major of advertising agency and the creator of the "I heart New York" campaigns for everything from cars to presidents. However, they think that social and cultural influence in their advertisements, it took light in the human emotion and commerce.

In this 21st century, advertising plays an important role in many companies or organizations. It brings the meaning of the word out about the product or service to the consumers. It includes many different elements like message and visual appeal in the psychology of advertising. In my opinion, the field of advertising is a different of positions ranging from public relations, media sales to research and analysis. Advertising is essential for a brand new product, service or idea in the market. It helps the seller to express their product to market in order to increase the sales revenue. Mass media like newspapers, magazines, websites and televisions are the main source of income for publishers. The cost includes various data gatherings and information-processing activities. Some examples include writing, editing, printing and distribution. At the same time, with the technology advancement in advertising, the prices of the high-quality databases are also affordable for consumers of publishers. The masses and educate of advertising has remarkable ability in the society. Therefore, many governments and organizations make use of advertisement to attain and educate people on importance of social matter such as saving electricity and water.

In addition, advertising has evolved for as long as humans have been trading with each other from our earliest days. In late 19th and 20th centuries, print advertising became primary channel for companies to communicate and interact with consumers. Social media and digital advertising have become essential tools for marketers over the past few years as it has penetrated in our daily life. The scene that gave an impression on me is, “Whether we like it or not, they have shaped our culture to a huge degree and nobody knows where they are coming from,” said by the film’s director Mr. Pray. This is one of the quotes in the documentary I like because either the advertising is good or bad, the film just wants to show us that behind advertising have left an impression on American culture. Besides that, the scene “Got Milk?” mentioned that this advertising almost never saw the light of the day. However, the documentary shows us the personality and what was the culture changed in America.

After watching this documentary, I found that advertising is an important field in our daily life and it is also an interesting job because we can find the new things that we might not have experience before in our life. Besides, this is one of the reasons why I am taking Foundation in Communication. I can express my creative idea and thoughts in creating the products to convince consumers through the media. Advertising is a good field in which to pursue a career. Although it is a competitive job and takes time to complete an internship which effectively provides no pay but it provides many different skills to pursue in the career such as, communication skills, creativity, leadership qualities and organizational ability. It is also a chance to meet more people and learn the skills in marketing and communications. Therefore, the advertising industry is important for effective work, it will gain new opportunities selling, designing, and arranging advertising online.

The impact of advertising is profound and pervasive, it is hard to imagine that if the world without advertising. It might be difficult to us if the world was without advertising. Many people will face unemployment because advertising provides employment to a large number of people occupied in writing, designing and supplying advertisements. Company would also declare bankruptcy because they could not inform people about their products, services or needs through the media. Companies use advertisements to inform consumers about their new product such as televisions, billboards, posters, newspapers and magazines. Without advertising consumers would not know what they do or do not need but adverts do have a lot of useless information from time to time. Consequently, the product cost will reduce and the price of the product will increase because we do not know the real price in the market. In conclusion, the advertising industry is really important to us. I think if the business or societies do not have media they could not survive.

Advertising is not just a way to promote a product or brand but, it is also a lifestyle. The clothes we wear and the food we eat were influenced by advertisements. The branded clothes that we wear for other people to see can also be considered as advertising. Advertisements set social trends and catch phrases that will eventually become popular. For example, Nike created the ever popular phrase ‘Just Do It’ and that not only became a catchy catchphrase but also a motivational speech that was made by Shia La Beouf. We unconsciously follow the popular trend for its creativity and powerful messages.

During the Industrial Revolution, advertisements were on posters, newspapers and many other print media. As humans invented more advanced technologies, advertisements were able to be promoted in radios and soon television. Commercials were able to attract more attention from audiences after the innovation of the first television with colour. With the creation of the internet, organisations are now able to market their products worldwide. Advancement of technologies has helped companies spread the existence of their merchandise to far away countries.

The scene that really caught my attention was the examples of Volkswagen advertisements. Most of the adverts had such a simple design but it had a big meaning. I really liked how there was just one small buggy in such a big space of emptiness. The focus just goes towards the buggy and the phrase “Think small” was just brilliant. You can see the popularity of the car growing from the evolution of their adverts. From “Think small” to “We’ll never make it big” and finally to “Giant” shows the increased interest of that small car. I really like most of the interviews with George Lois. I like how he said that if we’re doing advertising, we had to create a big idea so we have to make the audience feel stunned. I appreciate the fact that he was promoting the African American’s rights. I enjoyed seeing the covers he did for magazines like the one Muhammad Ali leaning back a little and with arrows in his body. What I really like the most was how he was comparing advertising to poison gas. He said, “Advertising should tear you up, you should get choked up, you should get the chills and maybe you should pass out while you’re watching it”. That was an interesting way of seeing advertisements. Most people just disregard commercials they see in their daily life.

The documentary ‘Art and Copy’ showed me a better understanding about the field of advertising. It showed the importance of advertising in different industries. Advertising can boost the growth of a company. It can increase sales. Adverts can create a good reputation for a brand. This shows how critical it is to advertise.   From the documentary ‘Art and Copy’ Volkswagen became more popular with the help of billboard advertising. Advertising became a crucial role for Volkswagen because it was manufactured after the World War and the brand itself was of German origin which most people probably hated it for. After watching this documentary, it just makes want to pursue it more. I like watching how advertisement changed throughout history, from simple texts on paper to giant billboards at the side of a road. I think there are two types of people that perceive advertising. You either love advertising for its creative way of persuasion or you hate it for its constant efforts to try and win you over. Someone who is annoyed with advertisements would probably not be in this field but I certainly know I would follow this path that I have set for myself.

If advertisements do not exist, the life of society would be very mundane. There would be no trailers for upcoming movies, no big billboards to catch your attention and no funny commercials that will give you a good laugh.  We would not have anything to be hyped about. Times Square would actually look less interesting if there were no advertisements. Companies will lose their profits and consumers will lack the knowledge about the existence of a certain item. The newspaper and magazine industry will lose their main revenue which might lead to bankruptcy.  We are so dependent towards the advertising industry to find out about the latest iPhone or Samsung Galaxy. We use commercials to decide between two similar items that has the same function and without it, decision making becomes more complex. Trying to persuade a customer to buy your product would be harder. People usually buy the cheapest brand that they can find unless there is a reason why they should buy your product. Some advertisements may be annoying if it keeps on repeating but it plays a crucial role in our community. Not only can it convince us but it can also influence our behaviour and culture.

Globally, the field of advertising has definitely evolved a lot throughout the years as advertising is one of the pioneers of the business world. Advertisements are usually paid by sponsors to advertise things on mass media such as newspapers, magazines, radio and so on. Advertisements basically are enhancing the company name through creativity. Hal Riney stated that back then, being creative is nothing and unrecognizable as you are still considered as nothing as creative as you are. On top of that, Bill mentioned on how it was a great idea to put an art director to work together with a copywriter.

Personally, I will constantly question how long does it take to come up with a short yet strong message in an advertisement, especially knowing advertisements is one of the largest money making industry, wouldn’t the advertisers feel the pressure to come up with a really good advertisement? For example, as shown in the video Volkswagen has always been known for its great advertising throughout all this years as before this, they weren’t consider it as the trendy car in fact, people actually thought of it as the ugly German car. They are known to be innovative in advertising to attract customers. Not to mention, good advertisements comes with a high budget for it too. I have always thought about what will happen if advertisers were given a high budget but do not set a high standard for their advertisements hence not making their products sell? How will the loss affect them gradually over time?

My opinion on this is that I have realized that most established companies would pay a lot to advertise their product, as advertising is a big thing globally. For example, newspaper companies make most of their profit through advertisements in between columns. When your advertising is outstanding, people are convinced to buy your products. An ad on the super bowl itself cost $2,7 million, how crazy is that figure?  It is also amazing how if you have a brilliant idea for advertising, people are willing to pay just for that creative idea itself. Your thoughts and ideas could go somewhere in the long run. Hence, this makes good advertisers wanted in many big companies worldwide.

“Great advertising makes food taste better, makes cars run better, it changes the perception of everything" is one of the quotes mentioned in the video. In detail, the key to advertising comes with great creativity and idea on top of the effort contributed into it. A great advertising completes everything and gives you confidence in believing the product. This particular quote made an impression on me as the hidden meaning behind it is strong, bold and straight forward. Good advertisements itself not only convince you to buy the product, but it places high hopes on the buyers as they feel the need to purchase the product that was advertised. A strategy means everything when dealing with advertisements.

This documentary has further enlightened me about the future prospects of the field of advertising as I got to see what it feels like to deal with it on a daily basis. Advertising itself is a very stressful industry to be in as you have limited time given to come up with something fresh and funky to appeal to the public. The quality of the product itself has to be as good as what was advertised to reach up to their standards.  Would you be interested in pursuing a career in this field? Yes, I would consider pursuing a career in this field as I have a passion for business related fields but on the other hand, the process of making great ads are a challenge and only a few advertisers can come up with great ads. Advertisements make you think out of the boy and make you go a long way just to promote products. If you can do that this denotes you can be a good convincer.

Without advertising, society will be bland and boring with no sense of interest towards their personal thoughts. Life without advertising will be YouTube without ad disruptions, surfing webs without pop – up ads and sponsored links, newspapers without ad columns and zero commercials will take place. It will take you straight to what you wanted for in the first place. Of course that sounds like good news to most people but then again, this will lead to loss of jobs globally and advertising wouldn’t be a choice of profession at all and you don’t get paid for forming and idea. Advertisements also paint the city with colours for us to have a great view. Without advertisements, everything will turn out to be duller and no advertisements results in the bad effect of the country’s economy as advertisements is one of the much important money making industry.

The field of advertising is actually more than what meets the eye or what our premature conjectures make of it. It has a broader definition that extensively spans from not only catchy phrases that plays around with words but also setting consumer trends with the help of seminal ideas. However, a common misconception of advertising is that it is millions of dollars spent on repetitive advertisements but it’s not so much of that, it's more to the everlasting bond constructed for a particular business in relation to its consumers. As a result, it fabricates customer brand loyalty which nonetheless, would pay off in the long run for both parties. As stated by George Lois, “Advertising is like poison gas, it should cheer you up, choke you up, get the chills and maybe pay us out when you finish watching it.” With that in mind, when it comes to advertising, integrating an original idea is critical in the efforts to stun the audience thus leaving an abiding mark in their minds that would play a part in reminding them of the advertisement. For one thing, up until the late 1950s, advertising was an old boys club. The prerequisite to enter such an industry was that people needed proper education and good connections. Nevertheless, such a predisposition has evolved throughout the years and nowadays; it's a rather gender-neutral industry.

At the beginning of the documentary, there was an interview with Phyllis K. Robinson, the original copy chief at a very well – known advertising company called Doyle Dan Bernbach (DDB) that really made an impression on me. She told the story of the company from back in the days, where it started with only 14 people who were employed which included herself, the production guy and the phone operator. Truth be told, many people thought that the advertising industry in those years was nowhere equally stable in comparison to the other perdurable industries. In all honesty, Phyllis also had the same thought. This is due to the reason that at the start of Doyle Dan Bernbach’s infant years, the future of such an advertising company was just like any other – it seemed unclear. With that in mind, they strived to be different from the norm and after years of drawing good publicity towards them, the company was recognized as being preeminent in the advertising industry. In fact, its name would turn heads. Furthermore, the Volkswagen ads that was shown in the documentary really caught my eye because it had a minimalistic approach and this really taught me that advertising doesn't have to be intricate, it just needs intertextuality.

Not to mention, advertising is a never-dying business. It’s been around for years in the past until now and even the great depression did not deter its growth. All in all, the documentary definitely has enlightened me on the future of the field of advertising. Just by watching it, I now have better understanding about advertising from the film and I can say that the possibilities for this industry will continuously grow in the distant and near future based on the apparent changes in our current time. One unquestionable truth is that advertising will never be obsolete because it plays a critical role in many aspects of our lives whether it is business related or not.  It is much so that, people see advertisements and commercials scattered all over the place in various media vehicles for example newspapers, magazines and televisions and this subconsciously structures their lifestyle – the way they dress, the way they talk and the way they act. With such a thriving industry, who wouldn't want to embrace advertising?

Imagining society without advertising is imagining a human vessel with no soul. Such a thought is just unrealistic. Come to think of it, the world without advertising would be just difficult and mundane. Thousands of business organizations rely on advertising in offering job opportunities for the working class. Without it, a multitude of people throughout the industries would be laid off because the advertising industry normally employs people by the millions.  Moreover, without advertising there would be a wider market reach therefore consumers would not be aware of products that are offered out there. This would also put the matter of product stability for businesses on the balance due to the reason that there is an unstable flow of revenue coming into the business. Consequently, the prices of the products would fluctuate and would be unpredictable because we won't be able to determine the market prices of each respective product. Overall, without advertising, the world’s economy would definitely go off the rails and affect both consumers and businesses regardless the industry or size. From then on, it will affect the simplest things in life like basic human necessities and wants.
